Just saw this in a Facebook post:http://digital-photography-school.com/9-composition-techniques-to-use-to-improve-your-photography/. It talks about the "Rule of Thirds" and other compositional techniques. Note that it specifically says: "While some call these 'rules,' for many they are simply things to get your head around so that you can make better choices while composing your images (either by using them or ignoring them)."

I agree with that wholehartedly. - Ken

Actually, when I went back and looked at what I would call portraits, most of them had the subject centered.

BTW, I like this a lot - a lot of character in her face.

This is excellent, Traveller! As I see it, rules (i.e., the rule of thirds) are made to be broken when necessary ... Maybe they should be called "suggestions" instead of "rules!" - Ken

This was shot with the new 6D and I am particularly pleased with it since I am not good with people or portraits. I may burn tool, polish her eyes a little, though the eyes and blurred background are already good.

As to the rule of thirds...I tend to be more center frame than most photographers....but this is a conscious decision in PP...this was shot with her off set to the right....but the subject is her, and so the crop decision to exclude the truck bed full of trash seemed entirely correct.

But center frame may be more normal in Portraiture than other forms of Photography...I am thinking of people I know that make a living at this....and they tend, I think, to be less rule of thirds oriented.

I think. (but do not know)

This is a nice environmental portrait. I think I'd prefer it with the subject more off center, though. I think I remember you saying in a comment on a previous challenge that you were trying to get the hang of a new camera. What camera, and lens, did you use for this?
