5th - Bad moon on the rise - by Najinsky

Guernsey, C.I.

Is it just me, or is life a bit weird at the moment. Storms and tornados in England, Firestorms in Colorado, Rain in Thailand, No Ice at the North Pole, Bankers screwing everyone (back-up, strike that last one, that's normal).

Anyway, the moon rising behind my three cedar pines looked particularly spooky tonight with backlighting courtesy of lunamated cloud.

Not a special shot, but a good chance to test the Image Stabilisation and kit lens of my new camera. Not bad for 2/3s hand held, I think.

I probably should have turned on long exposure noise reduction, but the camera's menus are so complicated I accidentally turned off the touch screen 4 days ago and haven't been able to find out how to re-enable it!

Thanks db, appreciated.

Paul, I gave a fuller answer to the question on the other image here:

In brief, you lose AF, electronic Aperture control and Lens IS (but gain IBIS even for non stabilised lenses).

Traveller, yes Spain have been in a different class in recent years and last night gave Italy a complete masterclass.

Spain just really is better...you should be there to shoot it with the 400mm...Yes! Traveller

Wait, are you saying that you can also use your Canon lenses on that camera?? Does it work the auto focus and stop down the aperture?

What would happen, hypothetically of course, if you were to use the camera body IS and a Canon lens IS at the same time? Real funky results I'll guess.
This is sounding better and better all the time because it has a smaller sensor don't it?

Nice image, Najinsky: It has, IMO, some "painterly" quality. — db.

Thanks all, what a nice set of comments to come back to, much appreciated.

Traveller, thanks for the links, the photography in the film looks stunning and worth watching just for that. I'll try to watch it tonight after the football (Euro Soccer Final).

Michael, thanks for the menu tip; the last setting on the last menu! That's why I never got to it! The IS works very well and I've been playing with my EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS USM, I was about to sell it as it hasn't been getting much use of late. It's way too cumbersome on the E-M5 but surprisingly the results were exceptionally good and it does have a tripod collar so I may just keep it now, 800mm eqiv with F/5.6 light, how insane is that!

Paul, I see 2012 as just another year. I'm sure the earth will last longer than me, but doubt eh economy will! Thanks for the bonus comment!

Regards, -Najinsky

I have 2 comments.

1: Your comments about the weird makes sense since we're half way through 2012.
2: You have a touch screen DSLR...... I'm cashing in my Canon!
3: Bonus comment: Sweet!

This is great, Najinsky. -- Ken

Excellent shot for the topic Najinsky.

The stabilisation does seem to work well and I have been enjoying my 45mm f1.8. On a body for which iso 3200 is entirely useable and on which all lenses are stablised, it's possible to hand hold in semi darkness.

Custom menu K/Utility/Touch Screen Settings to turn on the touch screen, by the way (I think). Regards Michael

pic matches the title for sure! even w/o full knowledge of your new camera, you have, as always, managed to present an interesting, unique image. shu
