Eye Candy

i cropped an iphone 4 self portrait nearly in half (you can't hold that iphone too close to your face or it will distort the image terribly) and, consequently, had few pixels to work with. poor image resolution is made tolorable by making the image into a sketch. i moved the candy into the eye and desated the rest of the image in PS. you might say, the image "is what it is," but i sure had fun making it!

other sizes: small medium original auto

Very nicely done shu! IMO it is a bit unsettling to the brain, as something that we search for as the window to the core of a person is suddenly opaque, or seemingly so. Our brains can't quite come to grips with it, even though, intellectually, we sense on the surface what is going on.

thank you K and naj! first, naj, i greatly appreciate your remark that you find this image disturbing, and after additional observation, i fail to see it that way. due to your comment, i tried to look at the image from a different perspective but failed to question my original intent - to have the "candy" as a focal point and desaturate the rest of the image so that my title would be easily understood. i must say i value your opinion, and even considered trying your idea just to see if i would agree with your critique once the change had been made. (and i still may do so b/f the end of the challenge if i have the time.) however, i believe to decrease the size of the candy would make it barely visible in the image, therefore, reducing the image's comical intent. but, most of all, i value your candid remarks and i certainly admire your beautiful contributions to these challenges! also, i believe that most often, we love to compliment - yet hesitate to criticize. imo, we should do more of what you have just done b/c i believe that we can learn from helpful comments, or at least be made to feel more comfortable with our own choices by these honest critiques.

if any of you have time to add to this conversation, please do! i am interested in any further comments - pros or cons. shu

Hi shu, it's impossible to look at a picture of you and not feel joy. But this time there is a but. I've held back from commenting until I figured out what I'd like to say, and I think I'm there, or perhaps almost.

I think I'd like this more if the two elements were more integrated. For example, if the candy were smaller and blended with your iris.

As it stands, with the candy taking over the whole eye I find it just a little disturbing. I guess that artistically getting a 'disturbing' comment could be a good thing, if so I just gave you a compliment!

It's not that I'm squeamish, in fact when I was younger I used to date a girl with a glass eye (seriously), and she used to show off to freak people out (e.g.: rubbed her eyes with closed fist and the glass eye would slowly emerge from the little finger end!!). There's more but that's a whole other conversation!

Regards, -Najinsky

I did play with my choice of words below ;) Perhaps it is the eye with the candy?

thanks db! i'm glad you like this -- desat and all! i think what you are talking about "eye for creativity" means that sierra believes i have an eye for creativity. (well that's the way i interpreted it, anyway.) yes, i have the "eye" for creativity but i have one ----of a time using the necessary tools to make an image look just as i see it in my "mind's eye." LOL i'm a "poor old thing, aren't i." ha ha ha ha

Though I generally do not like "selective desaturation" of images at all, this is one of the few instances in which it does make sense to me: Very amusing picture, most charming model (!) and perfectly composed (for the challenge and otherwise). I like it; and its title too! BTW: Which of the two is the "eye for creativity" someone has written about further down? — db.

A very creative idea that was well executed. I like the pose you chose for this. The selective color is perfect for the challenge.

Once again Shu, you come up with an idea that wouldn't occur to me if the challenge ran for 5 years. Great work. Regards, Michael
