Storm I

Barnesville, GA

Church

I have edited and reposted the original photo I used. I think it looks a little better than it did. I couldn't use as much burn as I did on this one because the image is so light in color as it is but the demolished building stands out a bit more than it did.

Check it out here.
Original!

A nasty storm moved through my area between 1AM and 3AM Wednesday morning bringing with it an F3 tornado. My family and I fled from our home which was not touched by the tornado but the tornado did touch down about 10 minutes from my home. I grabbed my 5D Mark II and my 40D and went to take pictures of the devastation. The destruction was unbelievable. 2 people died in this as a result of the tornado that went through. About 20 miles up the highway another tornado went through causing the same amount of damage. I did not venture up that way because of the traffic on the highway. There usually is never any back ups on this main highway but with trucks hauling off fallen trees and rescue vehicles moving in and out of the area I decided to head back home after taking about 30 pictures or so.
These three images are just a sample of the destruction this one tornado caused.

We were very lucky. We fled the area and went about 30 miles south to avoid the possibility of a tornado coming through. We have no crawl space or storm shelter so our only option was to get away from it's path. As I mentioned 2 people died in this particular disaster.

A very informative reportage together with your two other entries, Alan. Now, after editing, the image reveals the damage much more clearly. What a disaster, meanwhile there are reported more than 340 dead people. I hope you and your family came through well. -Gerald

There, I did a burn on this a little. It looks much better! I also did a burn on the first one I did. I may upload it to the exhibition section.

Hmm. ah, I almost forgot about Dodge & Burn. I'll have to try that. To Be Continued :)

I like this edit :)
If you want to pull more focus to the center of the shot, perhaps just applying a selective dodge could do the trick?

I must say that I did do some PP on this using the Content Aware healing brush. There was a thick cable strung across about half way up the picture. It was quite distracting. I love that tool. It's a miracle that those cables were still connected to the poles after that tornado moved through.

i think this disaster speaks for itself and your enhancement helps us to see the impact of it. shu

Well, I posted a slightly overexposed version of it. I liked the other one because it looked more vintage but this one you can see the demolished church a little better.

a harrowing experience! so brave of you to venture out later to record the disaster! i agree that a sensible darkening of some of the foliage in the background may add some depth to the image. shu

Thanks for the advice Techo. Yes, I noticed that too after I uploaded it. The original looks a little darker. I'll darken it up a little more and replace this one later.

Living in Kansas I know all to well the power and damage of tornados. They never cease to amaze me in what they can do. I have witnessed right after a tornado the things you read about in the books such straws driven into a telephone poles and one lone house surviving untouched yet houses on both side of it were totally demolished. How does that happen? This is one of the reasons I take storm spotter training / re-training every year. Paul

It's a pitty about those two people who passed. Glad you and your family made it out.

The toning of the shot works, if anything I'd be tempted to darken those trees in the back so more of damage is focused on.
