The Church of the Holy Spirit (or Ghost) in Heidelberg was first mentioned in manuscripts in 1239. Built on
the remains oftwo earlier churches, the current building was started in 1398 with construction extending over
150 years. It was rebuilt in 1709, after the church had been set on fire by the French during the War of
the Palatinian Succession, when it was given a baroque spire.
Some of the stained glass is modern, like this one by Johannes Schreiter, which remembers the dropping
of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945.
