Hillman had been part of the Rootes Group since 1928, and the ill-fated Hillman Imp project contributed to the merger with Chrysler in 1964.
On paper, it was “an inspiration in light car design” to rival the Mini. Its light alloy rear engine with overhead camshaft was new technology
for a mass-produced small car. In practice, there were quality and personnel problems at the factory, and the Imp never threatened the popularity of the Mini.
I also owned one of these for a few years, and it was a pain! The engine kept blowing gaskets, and being in the rear, access was very difficult,
as it had to be dropped down underneath the car to get to it.
Engine: 875cc, in-line 4 cylinders, overhead camshaft, 39bhp.
Top speed: 76 mph
Cost new: £532
Manufacturer: Rootes (Scotland) Ltd., Paisley, Scotland
