Lorelei - perhaps the most famous feature of the Rhine Gorge. It marks the narrowest part of the river between Switzerland and the North Sea.
Shares the name with a female water spirit, similar to the Rhine Maidens, attributed with luring victims to their death. The name comes from
the old German word “lureln”, meaning “murmuring” and the Celtic word “ley”, meaning “rock”, translating to “murmuring rock”.
The heavy currents in the river created a murmuring sound, amplified by the echoes of the rock to give the rock its name.
