Kinderdijk

Legend has it that during the floods of 1421, the Alblasserwaard polder stayed unflooded. When the storm subsided,
someone went onto the dike to see what could be saved. In the distance, he saw a wooden cradle floating on the water.
As it came closer, he saw a cat trying to keep the cradle balanced by jumping back and forth, so no water could get in.
When the cradle was close enough to pick up, he saw a baby sleeping inside, nice and dry. The cat had kept the cradle
balanced and afloat, and the area thus became known as Kinderdijk, or “Children dike”.
