St Mary’s Tower, a fortification on the island of Comino, between Malta and Gozo. The tower was built in 1618 for
Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt of the Knights of Malta. In the 17th century, Comino served as a prison for errant
knights, who were sentenced to the lonely and dangerous task of manning the tower.
It now serves as a lookout to guard against contraband and the illegal hunting of migratory birds at sea.
