Dwejra, Gozo

The Fungus Rock, or Hagret il-General. The historic and scientific importance given to Dwejra Bay is mainly due to this 65 metres
high megalithic rock named Hagret il-General or Fungus Rock. The name is derived from a commander of a squadron of galleys, belonging
to the Order of St. John, who discovered an odd red plant which they thought was a fungus. The Knights valued the fungus for medicinal
purposes, and to protect it they guarded the rock vigorously, punishing by death any locals caught stealing it. The fungus was actually
a parasitic plant which has no known medicinal properties.

In 1992, this rock was declared a nature reserve and it is prohibited to climb upon it without due permission,
which is granted only for educational and scientific purposes.
