Pompei is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Napoli. Pompei was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompei under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1,600 years before its accidental rediscovery around 1592.

龐貝城，為古羅馬城市之一，於西元79年8月24日被維蘇威火山爆發時的火山灰覆蓋。1599年，一個建築師在挖河的時候發現了龐貝的遺蹟，但一直到150多年後，人們才真正開始挖掘這座古城。龐貝是今天世界上唯一的一座其構造完全與當時相符的城市，其街道完全是棋盤似的縱橫交錯的，這是正宗的古羅馬的傳統。
