This image shows a self -portrait of Ghiberti that is about mid-way down the central part of the "Gates of Paradise".
Few artists signed their work prior to the 17th century.
But Ghiberti made this self- portrait in gilded bronze, as well as his full name on the lower edge of these East Doors of the Baptistery,
to establish himself as the author and artist who created this masterpiece.
