This photographer ponders his next shot in front of a small portion of an ancient frieze of archers from the reign of Darius I.
The frieze in polychrome glazed brick, dates from about 510 BC , and is from the royal palace at Susa in Iran.
The huge frieze , (of which only two panels are shown here, ) shows an army of men carrying spears, bows and quivers, possibly the royal guards of Darius I (522–486 BC),.
These arechers are also known as “the Immortals", an elite regiment of 10,000 men.
The Frieze of Archers formed part of the enormous exterior walls of the royal palace. Several sections are now in the
Mesopotamian section of the Louvre.
