This stele shows the King of Babylon, Hammurabi, receiving the earliest known Code of Laws
from Shamash, the Sun God, and Baylonian god of justice.
Hammurabi reigned from 1792-1750 BCE.

Harmarubi's law code is written in Cuneiform on the lower part of the black basalt stele,
and can barely be distinguished in the bright vertical reflection on the lower part of the stele.

Hammurabi's code is not only an example of laws and customs of the ancient world, but also formed the basis for our laws today.
The laws also bear a similarity to those in the Torah, (first five books) of the Bible,
and some scholars see similarities to Moses receiving the tablets with the 10 Commandments, though this is questionable.

The stele with the Code of Hammurabi was found at Susa, Iran, in 1901, and is one of the many treasures in the Louvre from ancient Mesopotamian .
