To preserve the sanctity of the mosque, tourists must use the north entrance which leads to a large courtyard, just opposite the Hippodrome.
(Worshippers may use the East Entrance.) The chains seen hanging from this gate are symbolic to encourage everyone to bow his head upon entering the sanctified area.
The height of the chains is meant to remind those on horseback to bow. or some say to keep horses out of the courtyard area.
