The two brothers, Kleobis and Biton are immortalized here in stone and shown with Karl discussing their importance.
The pair date from 580 BC, and are signed by the Argive sculptor
[Poly]medes who created the sculptures in the Archaic style.
They were dedicated by the Argive people to Delphi.
The story of Kleobis and Biton details their devotion to their mother, a priestess of Hera,
who had to be taken to the temple in Argos. The oxen to pull her cart were busy in the fields,
and Kleobis and Biton hitched themselves to her cart and pulled the wagon 5 miles to
Argos to deliver their mother in time for festivities.
In thanks for their devotion, their mother asked the goddess Hera to give them the best gift man could have,
and the youths lay down to sleep and never woke, gaining immortality. as we see in this image.
