This original panel from Ghiberti's East Doors of the Florence Baptistery, shows the Sacrifice of Isaac in an "historiated composition",
meaning that several parts of the Biblical narrative are shown in one panel.
On the left, Sarah looks out from the tent where her husband Abraham kneels before three messenger angels telling him that Sarah will bear a child,
even though she is beyond child bearing age.
On the upper right side, Abraham is in the act of sacrificing Isaac, his only son, while an angel from God flies down to stay his hand.
On the lower right, two men and a feeding donkey await Abraham.
The image is one of 10 panels showing scenes from the Old Testament, made in gilded bronze between 1425 - 1452. by Lorenzo Ghiberti.
This original panel is one of several displayed in the atrium in the Museo del Duomo in Florence where they are protected from the elements.
The panels on the East Baptistery doors are copies.
