A "memento mori" is a common theme in Renaissance and Baroque religious art.
It is a reminder of our mortality and obligation to live a virtuous life, and is seen both in highly symbolic ways,
such as in depictions decaying fruit and wilted flowers in paintings,
and in more graphic ways such as this image of a skeleton in the church of Sta. Maria del Popolo.
