The Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral was built in Helsinki in 1868 (for the holy virgin Mary) according to the plan of the Russian architect Aleksei M. Gornostajev in the middle of a shanty village. The cathedral is built of red brick and it has 14 gold-plated domes which have the form of flame. The Uspenski Cathedral is the biggest Orthodox church in Northern and Western Europe.
