Is this a newt? Anyone know? It was about 2 inches long, and I found it under a rock in New Jersey. Kinda cute.
**Update: It's a salamander. So what's a salamander? Why, it's any of various typically terrestrial amphibians that resemble lizards and that return to water only to breed.
And where did I get the 2 inch white seamless? From the paper plate store. Salamanders are much easier than say, elephants.
The Salamander is a Lead-Back phase of a Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus), definitely female and possibly gravid due to the girth. Plethodon is the only salamander genus in NJ without larvae that have terrestrial babies.
