National Hero Dr. José P. Rizal - a symbol of patriotism - was executed by a Spanish colonial firing squad on December 30, 1896.
The place features these stone seats for contemplation situated in front of 7-8 feet high statues that faithfully represent that day of infamy.
I am now standing next to the statue of the National Hero facing this area - the last he saw before he died (which used to be near the seaside).
His final days as an 'enemy of the state' can be seen here http://www.pbase.com/carinoza/fort_santiago .
The said 1991 sculpture located at the Rizal Park/Luneta is made by famed Philippine sculptor Eduardo Castrillo http://www.eduardocastrillo.com/ .
