A night in with ABBA

What is left.

I don't wanna talk

About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny

I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain.

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed

The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all...

Emotional for sure. The silence is deafening when considered with the lyrics. Amazing combination.

Awww... thanks guys! I am completely chuffed with the respponse to my first ever Thursday thingy!

A few answers: It was a tie between 'Super Trouper' and this one. When I came home, the light was already fading, so it was strictly indoors shot. I photograph weddings, so... thought I'd do rings, although any self-respecting bride would sack me were I to picture her most precious jewels with a bunch of soggy tissues...

We all experience break-ups, and these lyrics are so touching, so true, and seeing some of my friends go through a divorce in their early 30's means yes, the situation depicted is sadly familiar.
The lower one is an Elsa Peretti design, a memento of Breakfast at Tiffany's :)in New York. The upper one I designed myself, and it was made by a nice goldsmith in Cape Town . Girls take note: There is no need for a man to put a rock on your finger - if you want one ... get one for yourself!

And Karen is right... 'I do I do I do' is a wonderful Abba song... but it would possibly have looked a bit, err, desperate for a single girl in her 30's ? Answers on a postcard, please.

Touching entry...and beautiful rings.

Quite a few of their later songs were an autobiography of pain. It must have been felt really strange singing about your break-up when it was written by your former lover and fellow band member.
Something similar happened in Fleetwood Mac.
