Go tohttp://www.dxomark.com and compare the D40 and D60. Compare other cameras too.

The D40 is a great camera. The D60 is a great camera. There are differences (including price & MP) which should be factored in when choosing the camera that best suits your style (e.g. if you plan on making big prints then perhaps you should go for the higher MP).

Shame on all the supposed CCD & MP experts for claiming the D40 is better. It is simply a different camera. Whether the D40 is better or worse depends on who is using it.

I disagree with George. More pixels on a given size CCD means smaller pixel with weaker light sensitivity per pixel and therefore more noise in general, which in turn needs more aggressive on board software processing to make photo look acceptable. The aggressive processing usually results in very digital look of the picture, i.e. unnatural and flat. Knowing this you can start to understand why D40 in general produces higher quality pictures with more natural and 3D look. I bought my D40 for this very reason. The rest is you, the photographer's job.

I've been playing around with my D60 for about a month now and have posted a few shots in a D60 gallery.

HI, could somebody please post some quality samples from this camera? It's rediculous how long it's been out and how many people are using it and nobody posted any samples excetp these 53 or so.. While I agree that great picture is always taken by photographer, not a camera, I have to oppose to mr. P. Rousseau and K. Rockwell and other critics- more mp DOES matter (but not when you have to sacrifice a quality a LOT-not this case), and is very useful even if you don't print- you have much more fine detail available and especially you can crop the image and thus gain quite a bit of zoom range this way. While I like how D40 images look, for modern photographer 6 mp is hardly enough , difference between 6 and 10 mp IS VISIBLE even on monitor and finally, who wants to buy almost 3 year old technology for almost same price as current one?? So some users please post some more photos finally and don't get discouraged by naysaying comments. Thanks

I agree with Pierre here. Nikon runs the 6.1 mpix X 2 to mathc 12.2 mpix full size on there D3 - D700 FX series to get the best picture quality ever made. I have D200 and D40, tested D40X and D60 and none of those 3 cameras can compete with the picture quality of the 6.1 mpix D40. Even today, opening my D70 raws in PS CS3 Raw, the rework skills of that soft allow me to make pictures that the D200 cannot compete with. Sometimes I think about to get a good used D70, that camera was really the best I ever had and the D40 I ow is, but on picture quality only, the best camera I ever used. All other camera jokes and games that Nikon is playing at the moment is commercial bullshit made to get you to buy a new model every year without any reason or to "have to".

Even disregarding cost, compared to the D40, rubbish. Get the D40 for more than $200 less, ... its 6mp CCD-sensor actually gives better image quality and its flash sync is MUCH faster. The D70s, however, is the best consumer camera Nikon has built, except for the small viewfinder. Stop your fake Canon-like marketing nonsense, Nikon.
