Eccentric folk-artist Leonard Knight's personal quest to build a majestic,
colorfully painted ode to God in the Southwest California Desert in
Niland, California, just east of The Salton Sea

Details of his life, motivation & overviews of the imagery
are written under many of the photographs.
There are several groups of photos made from many trips there.

Leonard and Salvation Mountain were featured in the movie "Into The Wild".

I've read all kinds of articles on this man Leonard, and I am in awe of him and his mission of LOVE! I can only hope to one day meet him and tell him how much of an inspiration he is to me. We have been visiting Leonard since we moved to the Coachella Valley and discovered Salvation Mtn in 1997. It is a wonderful, sort of magical place and we just love to visit Leonard as often as we can and bring along or send friends to see his marvelous creations all for the Love of Jesus and God. We wanted to go here when we visited the Salton Sea, but either it was lightheadedness from the dead fish stench or the heat that made us forget all about taking the detour. Leonard Knight looks like a real character.

Visited Leonard in 2002. Very remarkable man he is. It is but a few times in a lifetime one meets a truly dedicated person. Leonard is such a person. Just for the record, Leonard appears to believe in the same thing that many millions of people have believed in over the past 2000 years. So, if he's 'friggin nuts' as one person commented, at least he's in a heck of a lot of company -- and that includes me (I just don't have near the artistic vision Leonard has!). This is a wonderful gallery -- great, colorful images. If I get a chance to go visit old Leonard I won't pass it up! Thanks for sharing these great images! God Bless, Greg

Dan, Its great to see Leonard on Pbase. We go dove hunting in Niland, CA ( about 5 minutes from Salvation Mountain and Slab City). We never knew it existed until a special on KCET showed it one night. Now, every year we go up there in Sep. and Nov. we go visit Leonard. He is an amazing guy. (And I am not a "Jesus Freak") He has passion in what he does and does it well. Every year we go up there, we see the new stuff he has added. He has no job, no money, but a vision of how he wants his mountain to look. All of the paint is donated by people who have stumbled across this huge bright spot in the middle of a California Desert. To all you Pbase'rs if you are in Ca. and in the middle of the desert and you have the chance, it is definatly worth the drive to see. Thanks! Steve
