Ceppus grylle
This beautiful bird was discovered in Southampton on 12/19/2009, and was often seen with Long-tailed Ducks. It may be the first Arctic subspecies of Black Guillemot recorded in NYS. Normally we see the Atlantic subspecies which is darker and has a larger bill.
Juvenile Arctic subspecies Black Guillemots have white-tipped secondaries as can be seen in pic http://www.pbase.com/btblue/image/121746257.
