Peeling Bark of the Manzanita Tree

Normally the bark of the Manzanita Tree is very smooth.
To protect the smooth bark, every year it peels away to prevents fungi, parasites, and epiphytes, such as mosses and lichens, from persisting on the tree’s trunk and stems.

a remarkable adaptation...the arbutus (pacific madrone) trees here do the same, but not in such neat patterns..
