The Awakening - Haines Point

This shot, any shot at this place, needs a person in it to give some perspective. This hand is about 6 feet tall. There's a full arm, part of a foot, a knee, and the face all part of a giant man awakening out of the ground. Some of it has been under renovation all winter. The knee is still fenced off. Also, would be nice if I could get better tones out of this. I tried brightening the background. I couldn't do better than this.

Haines Point is a great place for bike riding, two lanes, one-way, 3.2 mile loop, flat. Also popular with roller bladers. Today there was a lot of car traffic. I'll have to go somewhere else next nice day. I rode hard as usual, but can tell I'm out of shape. The good thing--according to my heart rate monitor, I burned 1905 calories. So, after dinner, I can have a glass or two of red wine and a plate of brei. :)

This display sounds amazing! I like this hand photo - I can appreciate it's size with the background as it is. Nice work!

You have captured this very well.

I feel troubled by it, I can see pain but also of course it is very beautiful.

If I were a little kid this park would scare the CRAP outa me!!
But it's terrific for a PaD . .You need Jessica Lang or Fay Raye in that hand! :->

This instantly caught my eye! Very cool idea for a PotD Mark.

This 'grabbed' my attention today!! Great B&W Mark as the hand really stands out?

A really "realistic" sculpture. Nice shot.

It is a bit creepy, Ann, but kids love to climb on it. Steven, Washington, DC. Jill, when they finish repairs and take down the fence I'll look for the right time of day to capture the whole thing.

Great capture, Mark - love the B&W choice. It's perfect for this subject. What a find!
Jill01-Mar-2004 01:34
WOW WOW WOW! Oh Mark what a find. Please do take more of the rest of the body. This is just fantastic!
Guest 01-Mar-2004 01:27
Very cool. Although my first impression was that it was a bit creepy. I like the black and white you've done on it too.
Guest 01-Mar-2004 00:59
WOW Mark! Great detail from the foreground, to the background.
brother_mark01-Mar-2004 00:49
Funny you suggest a self-portrait. I did take my picture while there holding the camera at arms length. Someone offered to take it for me, but I said I had to do it myself! :) However, I'm a bit out of focus and my head is blocking this hand, perfectly! Another day perhaps.
brother_mark01-Mar-2004 00:46
By all means Linda, post it somewhere! If you've already done all that work and I'm like, "invert it?" and 8%? Oh boy. Thanks.
robin statfeld01-Mar-2004 00:37
Your composition showing the background does give it the proper scale, great shot! Will we see a self portrait sitting in his palm? : )
Guest 01-Mar-2004 00:28
This is awesome! That would be cool to see in person one day...what city and or country is this in? :-) Great shot! DUDE...NICE!
Linda Vich01-Mar-2004 00:09
Wow, what a shot! Great composition and lighting here. I would love to see the rest of the "body!" If you are wanting to deepen tones a bit, you can try this: duplicate the image layer and invert it, set it to overlay, and then use Gaussian blur about 50. If you still want to play, duplicate the layer again and use the burn tool on shadows about 10% and then the dodge tool on highlights at 8%. A final sharpen with this combo - amount 43, radius 15, threshold 0, will really make the image POP! I have a sample, using this technique on your image, if you want me to post it somewhere for you to look at.
