Record Breaking Day 2-06-23

Kansas City broke a daily record high temperature set back in 1904.

Kansas City International Airport reached a temperature of 72 degrees today, Monday February 6th. The previous daily record for Feb. 6 was 70 degrees set in 1904, back when Theodore Roosevelt was president. Hopefully, the area won't be in the 90's by beginning of April. It was still close to 90 degrees at the very end of October 2022. Global Warming is obviously upon us.

Less than a week ago, the temperature was only 9 degrees Fahrenheit (and colder in the suburbs and surrounding areas). Weather and the seasons seem to be rather erratic in recent years. Lately, you hear about both more record high and more record low temperatures being set all over the Country.

Above is the end of the Amaryllis "Alfresco"'s blooming for this season (whatever the season is). It's first blooming of the season was back in late December.

The second Alfresco stem to bloom (with 3 flowers in January), however, grew twice as tall as the first one with 4 flowers. It grew so tall that one flower stem broke in half from the weight of the flowers. So, I put the separated flowers in a small glass on the kitchen table. This time (the second stem), Alfresco was in full bloom for 7 days on the plant and then for 6 more days in the glass. Today will probably be its last day. But it gave me still another photo when not much else was going on other than the warm temperatures outdoors.

The first blooming produced a sturdy 14" stem.

The second blooming for this season, however, produced a stem that was twice that in height!!! When it reached 14", it continued to add another 2 to 3 inches in height each day after that until it was well over 2 feet tall. No wonder the second stem couldn't support the weight of the large flowers. It just got too tall.

Fortunately, I was still able to enjoy the pretty blooms as cut flowers after the stem broke off. Unless forced to do so, I normally wouldn't use Amaryllis as cut flowers. Nevertheless, Amaryllis blooms are very long lasting even when in a vase. This bloom, when it was a bit fresher, also made for a very pretty photo https://pbase.com/britestar/image/173544346

"Alfresco is a double (almost triple) white Amaryllis. This fluffy, puffy Sonata variety has glistening white petals with a dainty chartreuse-green eye. The 6" full flowers are borne on 14" stems." However, the stem on the above flower was close to 30 inches. Until it broke, it just kept getting taller and taller and taller.
