Photo Journal Project

December 14, 2013
I’ve decided to try a personal year-long photo journal project. This is a personal challenge to take more pictures and post more images than I have over the previous years. At the end of the project I will create a coffee table book containing images from this gallery that speak to me on a personal level. To push my creative side I will use only prime lenses. In addition, I will use the in-camera settings to create the image. In other words, I want to use “the gear” and the “fundamentals of photography” to capture the image rather than relying on post processing.

December 21, 2013 Update.
My attempts to carry my main gear and camera bag with me on a recent business trip hit a snag. Six days ago I headed off to the interior of BC, spending time in Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kelowna. Two of the planes getting there and back were small turbo-prop planes. Meaning carry on luggage was reduced to a minimum. As in one bag only. My office brief case. NOT my camera bag. As I'm not sure how to get around this logistical snag I am considering using a top quality point-and-shoot size camera when on business trips. The Sony RX100M2 has a 1" sensor and is highly rated. I will have to mull this over for a bit as I already have a Canon S110, but I think I want a better quality sensor than the S110 has.

December 27, 2013 Update
I had the opportunity to purchase a black coloured Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens. On the EM5 it gives me the equivalent of a 35mm focal length. I am considering the concept of carrying this setup, my EM5 and the 17mm, most of the time and on business trips.

January 1, 2014 Update
I bought the Sony RX100M2 and will see if the images give me what I'm after. If it works out I will carry it when working and when on business trips.

January 6, 2014 Update
I decided to return the Sony RX100M2. The 1" sensor does produce great images for a "point & shoot" size camera. However, the camera is physically thick and definitely pushes the envelope with respect to what a truly "pocketable camera" is supposed to be. So, for now I will do my thing with my OMD EM5 and my Canon S110.

After considerable deliberation I traded/sold off my Olympus gear. I purchased a Sony A7 and the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 55mm f1.8 lens. For the time being I am shooting with only this camera and lens.
