Learning, again and again

So....how to handle a colourful background without Photoshop, so it does not dominate the main subject. Just using camera and lens.
From the angles that appealed to me the background was strongly coloured with reds and yellows.
The lens I used was not an f2.8 and bokeh would be a challenge.
The light was actully quite low and it was blowing about 30 km/h which moved my subject around a bit, so I wanted a decent shutter speed.
I shot this jpeg. Resized and slight contrast adjustment only.
Okay folks....what would be going through your mind for settings to use and avoid?

The bg was far enough away to be nicely oof with these settings. I would have preferred an angle that didn't have the plant behind and to the left of your main subject though..

Interesting challenge, yes one must look at the subject from different angles, to determine which one will give the best overall result. Can be a challenge but it is more interesting than learning Photoshop, I think. You got a great result here, the background it just perfect for the subject.

Nice subject detail and great milky smooth background captured on breezy day.
It is a great lens but not for bokeh.
Nice accomplishment.

I wish I knew an answer to your question, Brian. Seems to me you accomplished your purpose. This is an elegant shot, perfectly focused and with a soft non-distracting background. It works wonderfully well IMHO.

I know the feeling with the rough winds we have had, good shot, the f/8 still gives you a nice smooth background and the colour is very complimentary to the image which is very sharp..I don't think I would have done anything different other than I never use jpeg ...Jess.
