Epupa Falls, Namibia/Angola

Epupa Falls was the most pleasant surprise of our trip around Namibia. We flew to this far north western edge of the country, right up on the Angolan border, not exactly sure what to expect. We found an amazing landscape of hundreds of cascading waterfalls highlighted by mighty baobab trees and palm groves. Kaokoland is the home of the nomadic Himba tribe, a very primitive yet colorful people.

I visited Epupa Falls, driving from Opuwo, in 1994. Your pictures are much more spectacular than mine, as I didn't have a friend with a plane; but it's a beautiful place -- well worth the effort to get there. I really enjoyed looking at the country west of Epupa Falls as I didn't get travel to the coast that far north. I lived in Namibia for two years and am planning to return.

i hated it there al i did is get sick fall all the time and still didnt have fun wit my kids and my kids didnt have either i made them stay out side and pich a tent out there cuz i dont want them getting sick ill try again maybe itz was just a bad 2 weekz telll you the truth i kinda laugh over it bhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaahhaha means lol means laugh out loud bahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahha im a wired and fun mommy yaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I had the priviledge to visit Epupa Falls in June of 2006. It must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. There is no doubt abouit it, I am going back. The photo's bring back very good memories. Ruben Rhodes Titus (South-Afica)

Thanks for the memories! I taught grades 9-10 @ Opuwo's Putavanga JSS a few years back. I can see my school (and I think my house!) from the air shot of Opuwo town, as well as so many of the dusty roads I hiked everyday: to the post office, bakery and stores. Kaokoland is true Africa (versus the Europized central cities of Windhoek, Omaruru, Swakop, etc.) and the inhabitants, the Himba, Namibia's national treasure. The Himba courageously took on the Namibian & Angolan governments when they resisted the Epupa Falls hydroelectric dam project in the late 1990s. It would have wiped out their land and life they hold so precious. While tourists have added to many Himba village larders over the past since the war ended, constant western contact threatens their pastoral culture and traditions. It's such a complex and difficult situation, but such a stunningly beautiful landscape.

Loved your pics! I leave next week for a road trip through Nam...is it worth the drive from etosha to Epupa falls? A couple years back went to Himba Village outside Opuwo, am fascinated with the Himba people. Am an artist and would Love to get more photos to make into paintings. Thanks for sharing!
