Kosovo has been administered by the UN and occupied by NATO's KFOR (Kosovo Force) since 1999 when the NATO bombing campaign forced the serbs to withdraw. It's still technically a province of Serbia, though its independence seems a foregone conclusion. most of the troops you see in these pictures are there to guard the serbian orthodox churches against the majority kosovars. the tables have definitely turned since the days when the milosevic depeorted over 800,000 kosovars in 1999.
