De Vecchi, the first Italian Governor of the dodecanese, built a luxury villa on Profitis Ilias, the third highest mountain on Rhodes island, in 1936. The Italians left in 1943 and in the late fifties King Pavlos renovated the house. After the villa was no longer needed it was left to fall into disrepair, a shadow of the glory it once represented. In 2004 the local municipality applied for a grant from the European community and began a sympathetic restoration of the hotels Elafas and Elafina (meaning the Doe and the Deer) near the villa. There are plans to turn the villa into a spa.
