M107 is a rather small and dim globular cluster in the southern
part of Ophiuchus. It is unusually "loose" for a globular cluster,
and is characterized by dark, obscured regions rare in such an
object. This was perhaps the last object in the Messier list to be
discovered; it was first recorded by Messier's friend Pierre Mechain
in 1782. It was not added to the Messier list until 1947. M 107 is 21,000
light years away, and about 80 light years in diameter.
The short streak in the upper right part of the image is asteroid #67 ("Asia"),
moving through this part of the sky on the night the image was taken.
