M 65 (top right) and M 66 (bottom left) are two spiral galaxies located
in the constellation Leo. M 65 is a typical, tight spiral
galaxy. Though it is dominated by older stars, the dark dust lane may
hide new star-forming regions. The arms of M66,by contrast, are clearly
distorted, and there is an abundance of darker, dusty areas, and brighter
areas of new star formation. These galaxies are about 35 million light years away.
