M 29 is the small open cluster at the center of this image, and
is nearly lost in the wealth of stars in the summer Milky Way. It
is a bit surprsing that Messier bothered to notice this rather
unremarkable cluster set in the middle of such a rich area of the
sky. This cluster is located close to the center of the constellation
Cygnus. Much of the light from M 29 is obscured by interstellar dust
along the plane of the Milky Way.
