Our heavy winter snow finally arrived after several false alarms. On the valley floor we had about 7-8 inches but on top of Cove Mountain it was closer to 18". The problem is getting there. The old mud and stone road is fine for jeeps you don't mind denting or four-wheelers. But what to do when it's covered with snow and ice and the temperature in in the 20s?
You find a friend who owns a Humvee and take it to the top. Cold as hell but beautiful and we made it without too many problems. The only other person to get there yesterday was a bundled up fellow on a four wheeler and we saw him at the bottom after he had gone up. His face was cherry red and he seemed very happy to be down. This Humvee has a top speed in the 70s but is nothing but power. Great traction and the guy knows how to drive it. Every time we started sliding slightly he never came off the gas and turned into it immediately. The road isn’t much and in spots we were cruising along edges with 40 and 50 foot drops. Some were a great deal more but that vehicle is amazing. Big thrill and my daughter loved it.
