I've renamed this gallery so that it can hold all my bird shots from San Diego up to Ventura.
I've added some shots that have more photojournalistic appeal than photogenic, any and all
comments are always appreciated. New shots will be added to the top.

I'd like to place a special thanks to Randall from the Ventura/Oxnard Courtyard Marriott for
his great advice on where to go to get some good shots. His locations were spot on and I can only

Sue: I think your bird is a Hooded Oriole. THey love the hummingbird feeders but are much bigger!

I also live in Orange County and am always visited by a small bird that is small and black, a whit belly and has a mohawk. I've been trying every website I can find! It loves to search for worms. Whoever posted that it maybe a Black Phoebe, thank you! I stumbled onto this website, I'm really hoping that's what it is. My bird seems to follow me everywhere! Thanks!

I've had a yellow belly and black bird trying to eat from the Hummingbird feeder. He is just beautiful. Any idea what kind of bird it is?

I have dozens of Hummingbirds coming to my feeder daily. They stayed for winter too. I'd love to share some pics with you if your interested. I had (22) at the feeder one day in Sept. Thanks Tim

It is now early July. We live against an undeveloped canyon land in Brea, Cal. Recently we noticed an obvious, very active pair of bird we've never noticed before. Approximately, if maybe smaller than the mockingbird. Much the same length and girth as well Both have a brown/grey coloring much like our common song sparrow. However, one has a bold rusty orange breast. The two seem inseparable as they constantly hunt/gather clearly worms and insects. This bird runs, much like a road runner. Too many birds to single out it's song or call to help with its ID

Fantastic website! Thanks for sharing. Late afternoon this past summer, I glanced out my Long Beach, Ca apartment (near ocean) to see a really large bird standing on the peak of my neighbor's house. As soon as I tried to get a closer shot with my camera, it spotted me and took off. It must have stood nearly 3 feet tall, gray feathers - which were rather weather beaten.. He had a full body, long legs and neck and a sizable long beak - but not like a pelican - more like a crane. Any ideas what bird this may be?

To S. Alperin: It may be a Black Phoebe. Does it dart around and catch flying bugs? I've seen several of them lately in Orange County.

Lately I've been visited by a black backed, white bellied bird with a sort of flat-topped Mohawk on it's head. It had a loud squawk. I lands on my railing, porch, or roof line & calls loudly. I thought it was a junko, but can't find a pix that looks like my friend. Has anyone any ideas? I live in Orange County, CA.

I recently saw a small black bird (no bigger than the raven but larger than the Fritz) that had speckled coloring similar to the Peacock or the Fritz. It was a beautiful bird and I'd never seen him before. Anyone have any ideas?
