You can see where there are more carotenoids in this feather... Carotenoids are the same material that our nails are made up of. Lighter-colored feathers have fewer carotenoids.
More carotenoids = greater resistance to wear and stress caused by the sun and friction. The darker areas on an old gull feather tend to hold up better than the white areas of a feather!
