Historic Route 66


U. S. Highway "Route" 66 was commissioned in 1926, the year U. S. numbered highways came into existence. It consisted of a 'collection" of two-lane concrete or asphalt paved roads extending from Chicago to Santa Monica, running through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Route 66 is considered the "Mother Road" of American highways. The old "Main Street of America" was deactivated in 1984 and the U. S. 66 highway shields taken down, after being replaced by the modern interstate highway system.
Route 66 was a major path of the migrants who went west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive even with the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.

Great gallery...we did most of Route 66 a few years ago, however most of your shots were the areas we didn't get to. Wonderful gallery!

Thanks so much for this gallery. I am in the planning stages of my first retirement trip which will be travelling the full length of Route 66 from Chicago to LA. Viewing your pictures has just heightened my excitment and enthusiasm to get going. I'm leaving around this time next year for at least 3-4 weeks.
