the master

What happens when a sports renagade spins a Frisbee for decades? A movement art form is created. Michael P. Ferguson spins a Frisbee and then moves it in slow, graceful forms. As soon as I saw him perform I asked if I could photograph his performance. My challenge was to freeze the body while at the same time showing the motion of the spinning disk, which meant longer exposures. I shot outdoors with only indirect daylight against a black sheet. I had Michael perform and then freeze as he hit a position that had image impact. We did 2 shootings; it was hard work. Michael had to concentrate and hold the body positions for extended periods while still balancing the spinning disk. By the end of the sessions he was covered with sweat. In processing I pushed contrast so that his black clothing largely disappeared. Due to the light angles not all images show the full frisbee or its spin. Sometimes there is just a thin line and the imagination has to fill in the details. Michael is a remarkable athlete, who refuses to grow old.
