Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite related to the African trypanosome that causes sleeping sickness. It is spread by reduviid (kissing) bugs and is one of the major health problems in South America, where 20 million people are infected. The Chirimacha is often found in the homes of impoverished towns like this one.
