Chirimacha! (Reduviid Bug)

La Joya, Peru view map

Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite related to the African trypanosome that causes sleeping sickness. It is spread by reduviid (kissing) bugs and is one of the major health problems in South America, where 20 million people are infected. The Chirimacha is often found in the homes of impoverished towns like this one.

Guess what? It's not just in South America now. I have a friend who is an infectious disease specialist here in Nashville, TN. who found a Reduvid bug in his bed. It was idenified by the Nashville Metro. Health Dept.
