The massive Castillo San Felipe with its 16 batteries anchors the fortifications of the port of Cartagena de Indias. A major hub for gold export and slave trade, among other things, the port was very important for the Spanish Colonial occupation powers. Consequently, the Spaniards built an elaborate system of defenses against pirates and against other seafaring enemies. The very well preserved Castillo is a major tourist attraction in itself, while it, owing to its height, also offers interesting views of the city.
