On Sunday afternoons the shop door closed at 12.00 and the weather being fine, we walked the tree-lined Hulkesteinse Road and the narrow Klingelbeekse Road, where the religious brothers resided in the large white residence surrounded by specious well looked after gardens that stretched to the banks of the river Rhine.
To the right of the house was a pond stocked with gold fish and a grotto in honour of Mary, the Mother of God. We were allowed to peep around the corner as the gate was usual wide open. Opposite, on the other side of the road, you could smell the stables of farmer Bongers.
