The Histoire de Paris signs are historical markers throughout Paris illustrating the history of a location.
Here's roughly what the sign says:
In 1543, Pierre Caille bought a vineyard planted on a slope dominating the Bièvre river.
He will leave his name with this small agricultural territory,
whose history is hardly upset by the emergency landing of the first airship carrying the marquis d' Arlandes and Pilâtre de Rozier, in 1783.
The butte is then crowned by windmills; one of the last two remained on this small square, until the 1860s.
Stone and clay were also quarried in this area.
Between the Revolution of 1848 and the Grand war, the Butte aux Cailles was colonized by ragmen and workmen of leather.
This village without a church became populated with farms, workshops and trade, in a spirit of conviviality and liberty.
