Ellwood was built in the late 1700's and was home to only 2 families throughout its history. It served both as a Confederate hospital and a Union hosptial during the Civil War. During the Battle of the Wilderness, it served as headquarters to Union Fifth Corps General G. K. Warren. Family tradition says Robert E. Lee's father wrote his memoirs in an upstairs room and the Marquis de Lafayette stopped here for breakfast in 1825.
Today Ellwood is surrounded by 180 acres of working farmland out of the original 5000 acres. The NPS has worked hard to stabilize the house and much work has been done thanks to the nonprofit group Friends of Wilderness Battlefield.
I grew up not terribly far from here and this was my first visit to Ellwood, after being closed to the public for 20 years.
It sits in one of the most beautiful rural settings I've ever seen.
