Skansen, on the island of Djurgarden, one of Stockholm's 16 main islands, is a 75 acre recreation of earlier life in rural Sweden.
A living history museum, Skansen, was the world's first open air museum, founded in 1891 with the aim of bringing traditional rural culture in Sweden to the people of the city. There is a complete 19th century recreated town where craftsmen demonstrate their work, farms and farm houses, an open air zoo displaying Scandinavian animals, school, a Sami Camp and a grand period country home.
Gardens, forests, lakes and woodland walks link towns, farms and market squares. Families enjoy a whole day there with cafes and restaurants to suit all. A small funicular provides a ride to the displays or a walk uphill is no effort.comment | share |
