Trekking on Kilimanjaro

Photos from our 6 day adventure up Kilimanjaro (World's highest free standing mountain/volcano at 5895m) on the Marangu route. What an amazing experience! It was a lot more difficult than we expected but all the more rewarding having made it to the top.

I went up with a party from the Junior Leaders Company, Kings African Rifles in 1961'We took 3 days going up, camping in the caves on the way then spending a few hours in a tin hut on the saddle below the summit, setting off on the final assault at 0200hrs and reaching Gilman's Point around 0800. The journey down was much quicker, jumping and sliding on the scree although we all had bad headaches from the altitude. Definitely the trip of a lifetime with stupendous views on both sides.

You're right, "It was a lot more difficult than we expected", but what a great and unforgetable experience!

I went up from the Kenyan side Loitokitok with the Outward Bound Mountain school..;-)
Stayed in Loitokitok for many years, an amazing little Masaai village on the slopes of the mountain..
