GBAO is home to a number of distinct languages and dialects of the Pamir languages group: Shughni, Rushani, Wakhi, Ishkashimi, Sarikoli, Bartangi, Kufi, Yazgulyam, and Oroshani. Russian and Tajik are also widely spoken throughout GBAO.
